Management Education
In 2005/6 Kintan principal, Nick Birrell, set out to establish a university program that would teach business to scientists and, importantly, provide a path to a business career for science graduates who felt that creating value from science was of more interest to them than a career in the lab. With considerable support from the senior management of Monash University, the Master of Business (Science & Techology) degree program was launched in 2007. Nick ran the program from 2007 - 2009 and presented a cornerstone lecture series entitled Pathways from Science to Wealth. He also supervised exciting student Commercialisation Projects in which students worked with Monash scientists to produce a commercialisation plan for their research. These projects led to some of the ventures that Kintan in still involved in. The success of the MBus(S&T) is shown by the subsequent careers of its graduates (see links).
While fast tracking the business expertise of science graduates is helping fill a critical expertise gap, our experience in venture capital has provided insights into further education opportunities to help those with an interest in creating wealth from science and technology and in business in general. Developing these insights is an ongoing project.
